234 examples, visualized. Created using http://wordle.net/
A month ago, I published a list of social media marketing examples. At the time, the list started with 131 brands that were involved in social media to some extent. (Sometimes not by their own choice.)
A month later, the list has added over 100 new brands due to the contributions of 81 community members.
Some interesting things happened along the way. Dion Hincliffe from Social Computing Magazine requested permission to republish the list, no problem. Almost 200 other bloggers have found the list helpful and I hope you do as well. Unfortunately, I also stumbled across a few cases of plagiarism - two that were coincidentally blamed on "assistants" blogging whose work had not been checked. (Really? Maybe I need to get a blogging assistant, too. But I'll be sure to equip that person with a copy of the MLA.)
As my way of saying thanks, here's a search engine shout-out to give credit where credit is due to everyone who has contributed to the list (either directly or through prior art):
Jeremiah Owyang, Mashable, Forrester, Mack Collier, Social Brand Index, Gavin Heaton, Philippe Deltenre, zeroinfluencer, Bruce Eric Anderson, Nick Ayres, Jeff Glasson, Luke, Mike, Robin Seidner, Tom Shea, Ed Nicholson, Stefan Halley, Tom Hoehn, Debbie Weil, Marta Kagan, Paull Young, Kevin, Paul Fabretti, Nick Huhn, dominic, Michael Pranikoff, Kyle Flaherty, Ed Terpenning, Chi-chi Ekweozor, Lisa, David Bressler, C.B. Whittemore, Torley, David Jones, Keith De La Rue, Sean Lew, Tom Cummings, Donna Tocci, Adam Singer, Yianni Garcia, Matt Cronin, Stephen Manning, Jim Dietzel, Clayton, Mike, Kira Wampler, Woody Meachum, Lee Aase, Toby Bloomberg, Adam Denison, Colleen Gatlin, Davezilla, Gina, Marcos Fargas, Marianne Richmond, Kevin Barenblat, Dan Entin, Bruce Ertmann, Sean Moffitt, Elana Bowman, Dan, Andrew, James O'Connor, Herve Kabla, Sachin Agarwal, Lou Cuming, Danny Urguia, Kathrin Lohmann, Rafa, John Galpin, Ken Kaplan, Kathy Mandelstein, BJ Cook, John Welsh, Nils Koenig, James Finnen, Miko, Yvonne DiVita, Juny Lee, Massimo Cavazzini, and Gunther Lie.
But seriously...234. Do you think that's it?
I'm surprised there aren't more teen-focused sites on your list. While definitely there are plenty of people out of their teen years who visit social networks (myself included), I still think the younger demographic gets more excited about the day-to-day checking of social network sites, which ultimately helps with brand awareness.

Following Peter's great idea, I am compiling an equivalent list for companies using social media to market themselves in the UK. Do you have a client or a colleague in the UK who would be suitable for the list?

We're working with a company here in Sweden to create a social network event site to support their attendance at a convention. We're using mixxt.com as their platform. It's been an interesting challenge introducing the social media concept to a new client and then tailoring their needs to a specific event.

Not only a great list but also a textbook example of how a linked, open collaborative blogosphere helps all those involved:-
* Collaborative - the list started out with over 100 companies but your request for additions more then doubled the list.
* Linked - you carefully credited each contributor with a link back to that person’s blog, thus rewarding each contributor with further authority and pushing them up Technorati.
* Deeper links - other bloggers, in France and Mexico for instance with my blog, have then repeated your list and even credits, rewarding contributors yet further.
* Open - you are a former social media marketer and now work for a social technology company if I am not mistaken. In the old world you would be alerting competitors to potential clients. But the posting itself merely enhances your social media credentials with any client. After all, if they now look up their company name on Google, they will now find their name really high up because of the posting.
Well done!

I am sure that there are many more ... so your list will grow and grow. I recently saw a credit union:

But also know that there are many others in the pipleline.

peter, it's an amazing list and a great resource. I'm so glad you are curating it and not me.
I've got a couple more clients who have dipped their toes in on the social media news release side of the equation. Check out bayer.vtenews.ca for a social media optimized news site to support the launch of a new drug in Canada. Also, Avon Canada launched the news.avoncrusade.ca social media news release to complement their PR efforts with online outreach to bloggers. This also included a blog badge and facebook integration to spread awareness for this breast cancer fundraiser.
I've got a couple of other things in the ore production phase right now. I'll fill you in as they launch.

That's some linking Peter! Thanks again and well done on the list. I have it bookmarked now!

Hi Peter,
Sure, there are definitely tons of other companies in the long tail that are doing things. I think you captured alot of the great stuff that is happening though which paints a nice picture of this space.
Definitely feels like a good stratified random sample.
