Miss Universe: A Modern TV Relic

Last night I was driven to channel surfing, which usually happens when the Red Sox aren’t playing a night game.  NBC was showing the Miss Universe pageant.  It strikes me as odd that this show persists on TV; the show seems much better suited for the mass media audiences of days gone by, along with events like the Battle of the Network Stars.  Today’s prime time is ruled by reality TV and quiz shows – the Miss Universe competition has little of either.

Anybody have insight into ratings data?  Who is the content meant to connect with?  Some of the sponsors seem incredibly out of reach for the average consumer and I’m pretty sure the show isn’t drawing a huge fashionista crowd – or maybe it is.
