How quickly I’ll forget the Musée d’Orsay

The Musée d’Orsay used to be my favorite museum in the world. Not anymore.

About a year ago, the museum instituted a ban on visitor imaging. Why? “the increased number of visitors taking photographs ‘at arm’s length’ using mobile phones.” I’m not sure what this means – people are putting their phones too close to the art?

Experience is everything. Individuals visiting the same space at the same time viewing the same work of art have different experiences. Capturing artifacts of those points in time create memories that build affinity.

I don’t have any reminders from the inside, which is a shame because the interior itself is a work of art. Unfortunately the memories from this visit will fade quickly without any reminders to help retain the mental images.

  1. This is silly. Do you think they’re worried about people sharing their videos/images, and less people coming to visit? If so, they should study TED, when Chris Anderson put all their speeches online, that’s when the brand exploded. We’re in a digital revolution right now, people need to get that.
